According to the Marx Toy Museum online, Marx produced ride-on toys throughout its many years of toy production. Starting with simple ride-on trains and fire engines, to the battery operated cars of the late 50s, the Stutz Bearcat of the early 60s, Marx moved on to develop perhaps their most memorable, the Big Wheel and its many variations. The best and coolest variation on the Big Wheel was the Green Machine.

Some sources state that Marx released the Green Machine in 1968, although the Marx Toy Museum online pegs its release at 1975. Targeted toward kids that were too old or too big for the Big Wheel, the Green Machine is steered by control sticks connected to the rear axle. With the control sticks, kids achieved quick turns, brodies, and hard-angled maneuvers at “high” speeds. This was the ultimate riding toy for the older kids!

Although girls also rode this mean beast, Marx’s Green Machine was touted as being “…for guys 8, 9 and 10 years old who really know how to ride.” With a fore-and-aft adjustable bucket seat, the trike made room for kids of almost any size. Swivel-action rear wheels with huge, hard-plastic racing slick tires were completely controlled by the awesome green and orange stick shift controls.

The direct-drive pedal system powered the super-sized mag-style front wheel. All this, combined with the tight feel of the Green Machine’s hug-the-road, tip proof design made this vehicle King of the Road in many neighborhoods in the 60s and 70s!
